Scott C Otermat

Scott C. Otermat, 69, passed away unexpectedly April 5, 2016 at his residence. He was born Sept. 30, 1946 in Fremont, OH to James and Willah (Waggoner) Otermat. Scott was a 1964 graduate of Fremont Ross High School, and went on to Oberlin College, graduating in 1969 with a degree in mathematics. He served as an officer in the United States Navy after college. He earned a master’s degree in mathematics from Trinity College in Hartford, CT in 1975. He was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

Scott married Katherine (Kathy) Ellis on October 7, 1978 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Agawam, MA, and she survives. Scott worked as an actuary for the Hartford Insurance Group in Hartford, CT from 1970 – 1980. He returned home to Fremont in 1980 to start his actuarial consulting firm, Scott C. Otermat & Associates.

Scott was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Millersville, where he sang in the organ choir, led the Christmas Men’s Choir, and was a lector. He previously had been on the St. Mary’s School Board and led the children’s choir. Scott held various positions in the Cursillo movement of the Toledo Diocese, and had been a member of a Cursillo group reunion for 30 years. He had raised Hereford cattle. He loved the Sandusky County Fair, and sponsored an award for Hereford cattle each year. He had been on the Fair Board for the Sandusky County Agricultural Society and was a 4-H advisor for many years. He enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife, playing cards with friends, visiting bookstores, reading all kinds of books, solving Rubik’s Cubes, sudokus and ken-kens, and playing and sharing all kinds of percussion. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Scott is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kathy Otermat; children, Jim (Laura) Otermat, San Leandro, CA, Katie (Pete) Kramer, Melbourne, FL, Thom (Piloya) Otermat, La Mesa, CA, and Paul Otermat, Denver CO; twin sister, Sara Tanner, Fremont, OH; grandchildren, Luke and Abigail.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gladon (Pete) Otermat.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 8, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 900 North St., Fremont, OH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on April 9, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Millersville, at 10:30 am, with the Rev. Chris Bazar officiating. Burial: Four Mile House Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, the Cursillo movement, SNAP Ministries, or the Sandusky County Agricultural Society (Fair Board).
