Alben Andrew Koebel, 96, of Fremont passed away on Monday, April 5, 2016 at Prestine Senior Living. He was born on December 4, 1920 to George W. and Olive M. (McClure) Koebel. In 1939, Alben graduated from Fremont Ross High School.
Alben served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946, where he was a 1st class petty officer. He continued his civil service as a Fremont City firefighter, and had done so for 36 years until his retirement in 1982. Alben was a member of the Ohio Firefighters Association and the Fremont American Legion.
Alben played semi-pro baseball with the Green Socks and could be found playing in the Modern Woodman Band. He had also worked at Herbrand Corp, Erie Ordnance Depot, was a surveyor with Robert Rectenwald, and drove Betsy the Bookmobile for Birchard Library.
Along with his community, Alben’s life was devoted to his family. He married his sweetheart Betty Jane Moyer on January 2, 1942 and she passed on June 5, 2015.
Surviving are children, Thomas (Terry) Koebel of Greentown, PA and Eunice Koebel of Fremont; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife and brother, Vincent G. Koebel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, Fremont or Hospice of ProMedica Memorial Hospital.
A Private Graveside Service will be held at McGormley Cemetery, Fremont. Arrangements were entrusted to the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont.
