Dale E. Shimer, 89, of Fremont passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 at Valley View Healthcare Center. He was born on March 29, 1927 in Bellevue, Ohio to Virgil and Emma (Zechman) Shimer.
Dale graduated from Bellevue High School in 1945. Then, he went on to enlist in the Army in July 1945 and served in the U.S Army Band during World War II.
On April 20, 1951, he married Geraldine Durdel at Grace Lutheran Church, Fremont. He played tuba with many local bands including the North Coast Concert Band, Gang Band, Genoa American Legion Band and the Green Springs Community Band of which he played for 63 years. Dale volunteered for Share and Care and the American Red Cross. He was a church choir member.
Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Gerry and children, Marie (Gary) Perkins, Mark (Peggy) Shimer, Susan (John) Hoffman, Dinah (Emerson) Veler, David (Kim) Shimer, and Steven (Diana) Shimer; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and nieces, Pat Thomas, Chris Young and Laurie Christopher.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Thomas; and son-in-law, Gary Perkins.
Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2016 at the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Fremont. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Grace Lutheran Church, Fremont 10:30a.m. with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. Certified Celebrant Maureen Pump will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or the North Coast Concert Band.
