Lifelong Fremont resident, Haldon L. “Pete” Pump, 88, passed away at his home surrounded by his family Friday, Sept. 23, 2016.
Born in Fremont on May 19, 1928, he was the youngest of six children of August Leonard and Sadie Francis (McKeever) Pump. On Apr. 22, 1950, he married Joan G. Cooper in Fremont and were married until Joan’s passing on Jan. 6, 2006. Hal and Joan enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking and riding bicycles together. He liked to live by the compass, using it in his travels and hiking. He was never “lost” with his compass in hand. It always brought him home.
Early on he worked at the Christy Sign Company. He’s more remembered as a landscaper, working with his father and brother at Pumps Nurseries for 25 years. He retired from Moore Business Forms in Sept. of 1987.
Haldon was also one of the original Ballville Twp. Volunteer Firemen.
Surviving Haldon are daughters Rebecca (Gary) Harrison of Bettsville, Virginia Pump of Fremont, Judy Pump of Findlay and Tina Pump of Fremont; several grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a great, great-granddaughter; and sister Gladys Conley of Van Wert. Also surviving is his dog, Poppie, who provided companionship after the loss of Joan. Poppie and Hal enjoyed being in the yard, hiking along the rivers and woods and going on car rides.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Lowell, Neil, Lyle and Merlin.
A Celebration of Life will be held privately at a later date. He and his wife will be laid to rest in Lindsey Cemetery.
Donations in Haldon’s memory may be made to ProMedica Memorial Hospice or to the Sandusky County Parks.
