Honorable Judge Barbara J. (Steele) Ansted Wilson, 67, of Fremont passed away peacefully with family at her side on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at her home. She was born on September 11, 1949 to Laurence F. and Kathryn J. (Emch) Steele.
Barb graduated from Maumee High School in 1967, and then continued her education at Wittenberg University earning her bachelor’s degree in 1971. She later attended Pepperdine University College of Law graduating in 1978. In 1972, Barb married William “Bill” Ansted; they shared 36 years of a loving marriage before his passing. She opened her first law office in 1978 in Fremont, and was a magistrate and administrator under the Sandusky County Court in the Child Support Bureau in 1981. Barb was the first female prosecutor in Sandusky County, and was the driving force behind the Family Mediation Program, writing and securing grant money to fund the program. In 1993, she served as President of the Sandusky County Bar Association. In 2005, she closed her private practice to become the Family Mediator for Sandusky, Seneca and Ottawa counties. In 2008, she was elected to the Sandusky County Common Pleas bench and was re-elected in 2014. Barb was also an instructor at Terra State Community College, and had served on the boards of several organizations. Her passion was helping those in the community. She served on the board of Crosswaeh, an in-patient drug treatment facility. Barb started the Sandusky County Re-Entry Program which helps rehabilitate drug addicts and enter them back in society.
Barb married Robert S. Wilson on July 2, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church, Gibsonburg. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church who treasured being a part of their choir, and served as president for the church council. In her spare time, Barb enjoyed golfing and tap and ballroom dancing. Barb will be remembered as a kind and loving wife, mother and friend whose memory will be kept alive by all the things she has done for the community.
Surviving is her husband, Robert “Bob” of Fremont; sons, Andrew “A.J.” (Megan) Ansted of Lindsey, and Robert (Magdalena) Cochanski Rodriguez of IN; siblings, Susan (David) Woolford of Maumee; step-sister, Phyliss (Larry) Selter Hughes of TX; sister-in-law, Beverly Steele; brother-in-law, Roger (Terri) Ansted; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Kenneth) Neeb; mother-in-law, Pat Wilson; brother-in-law, Tom Wilson; sister-in-law, Janet Arnove, and Karen (Kenny) Yonker; and several nieces and nephews.
Barb is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Bill and daughter Allison Kaye “Allie” Ansted, who both passed away on June 8, 2008; brother, James Morrison Steele; step-father, Edward Selter and step-sister, Carol (James) Selter Burket.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 from 1:00-7:30 p.m. at the Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church beginning at 11:00 a.m. where there will be an additional hour of visitation being held prior to the start of the service. Pastor Blair Miller will officiate. Burial will follow at Harris-Elmore Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Allison Ansted Memorial Scholarship Fund, Fifth Third Bank.
