Elmer Hickman, 89, of Gibsonburg passed away on August 3, 2017at Genoa Health Care Center. He was born on November 30, 1927 in Job, KY to the late Walter and Noldia (Bowen) Hickman.
Elmer worked as a heavy equipment operator for the railroad. He was first hired in with Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, then with the Pennsylvania Railroad followed by Penn Central. He retired from Conrail in 1984 after 42 years on the rails.
He was a former member of the Fremont Eagles, Fremont Moose Lodge, and was a Father of the VFW. Elmer belonged to the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Railroad Labor Union. He will be remembered for his love of fishing, hunting, and umpiring at baseball and softball games.
Elmer was first married to Doris (Aldrich) Kasischke. They later divorced. On July 18, 1970, he married the love of his life, Frances J. (Huston) Weyandt.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Frances, are children, Larry (Dalene) Hickman of Dunbridge, OH, Melody (Jerry) Haar of Elmore, Edward W. Weyandt of Gahanna, and Rebecca Kay Heimsath of Columbus; sisters, Tamery Bowen, Alma Jean Bowen, Joann Marcum and Wanda Faye Mills; brothers, Delmer Bowen and Melvin C. Bowen; sister-in-law, Bonnie Tonglet; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 2 great, great-grandchildren.
Elmer is preceded in death by his parents; sons, Jonathan J. Weyandt and Thomas E. Hickman; sister, Ossie Meadows; and brother, Ova Bowen.
Visitation will be held at the Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg on Monday, August 7, 2017 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Gibsonburg on Tuesday beginning at 11:00 a.m. with an additional hour of visitation prior to the start of the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery. Pastor Blair Miller will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Gibsonburg or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Elmer’s family would like to thank the staff and aides at Genoa Care Center for the compassionate care and attention given to him.
