Margaret P. Calmes, 87, passed away at her rural Gibsonburg home with her family at her bedside, Saturday Sept. 23, 2017.
Born on April 29, 1930 in Wakefield, Massachusetts, she was a daughter of the late John T. and Mildred (Robbins) Maher.
Margaret graduated from Wakefield High School in 1948. She met her husband-to-be, Eugene Joseph Calmes, in Boston while he was serving the U.S. Coast Guard. They were married in Massachusetts on July 21, 1951 and were together over 57 years until his death on Mar. 3, 2009. They settled and raised their children in Fremont. They later moved outside of Gibsonburg in 1981.
She worked on the production line at the former Eckrich Plant, Fremont for over 20 years, until its closure, and was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Margaret was also a homemaker and a gifted seamstress. She was a wonderful cook and loved to bake, especially the family birthday cakes. Margaret will be remembered for her love of her family and being a wonderful Nana.
Margaret is survived by children, John (Cindy) of Fremont, Eugene Calmes, II of Gibsonburg, Timothy (Sue) of Fremont, Christopher (Kelly) of Fremont, Deborah Calmes Rheinholtz of Helena and Teresa Calmes of Gibsonburg; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene; and granddaughter, Janelle Calmes.
A Graveside Memorial Service, for both Margaret and Eugene, will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery on October 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. A fellowship meal will follow at the Fremont VFW.
Memorial donations may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
