Jean Carolyn Richard

December 3, 1917 — January 3, 2018

Jean Carolyn (Moore) Richard, 100, passed away January 3, 2018, at her residence in Naples, FL.  Jean was born in Piqua, OH, on December 3, 1917, to Arthur Charles and Ethelyn Lavinia (Stevens) Moore.  She was a 1935 graduate of Fremont Ross High School, earned her undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University as a Physical Education major, and later earned her Master’s Degree from Bowling Green State University. Jean taught English, Physical Education, and Specialized Reading courses for more than 25 years in the Gibsonburg, Ottawa Hills, and Rossford School Districts before retiring in 1978. Jean married Walden Richard (of Gibsonburg, OH) with whom she had celebrated 74 years of marriage prior to Walden’s death in 2014.

Beyond her career, Jean had many personal interests – instrumental and vocal music, quilt embroidery, baking, swimming and biking, church and community service (as a long-time member of Zion Lutheran, Gibsonburg, and a Habitat for Humanity volunteer after retiring to Florida), and Catawba Island Club member.  Her priority, however, other than most importantly serving her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, was caring for and about family and friends who will now dearly miss her presence in their lives.  Jean was most recently a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, Catawba Island, OH, and an associate member of the First Presbyterian Church, Naples, FL.

Surviving are Jean’s son, David (Sue) Richard of Sanibel Island, FL, and daughters, Diane (Richard) DeSantis of Venice, FL, and Gayle (Tim) Rink, Bonita Springs, FL; sisters-in-law, Wilma Hoy of Falls Church, VA, and Lucille (Lucian) Rowland of Port Orange, FL; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  Other than her husband, Jean was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Kay Frank and Marjorie Jones.

Visitation will be held at Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg, on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at 1 p.m. with Funeral Services beginning at 2 p.m.  Rev. Kurt Borows will officiate. Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg.  There will be an additional Memorial Gathering in Naples, FL at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Vitas Hospice, Naples, FL, Resurrection Lutheran Church, Port Clinton, OH, or Habitat for Humanity.
