Robert Leland Sorgen, 97, formerly from Fremont, Ohio, passed away on December 4th 2017 at the Oxford New York Veteran's Home in Oxford, New York. Our Dad was born to the late Clarence and Irene Sorgen on January 17th 1920 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was pre-deceased by his two older brothers, Roy and Merwin, and his sister Dolores.
Our Dad married our Mom, Luella Hak, on June 28th 1940. They were married 53 years when our Mom passed away on October 24th 1993. Dad has four children that survive him, Sharon Chard of Ft. Wayne IN., Michael Sorgen of Rock Stream, NY., James (Marlene) Sorgen of Independence, MO., Jani (Robert) Wolfe of El Paso, TX.9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 5 great great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Our Dad joined the Army on March 5th 1943 and served in WW2 in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was awarded with the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the WW2 Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on January 10th 1946, as a Staff Sargent.
Our Dad worked for Peter Eckrich and Sons. He started as a teenager at the Fort Wayne, IN store, as a floor sweeper, left to join the Army, and was hired back at Eckrich when he returned from WW2. He retired after 40 years as the Shipping Manager in Fremont in 1983.
Dad swore that when he retired that he would not hit a little white ball in the grass and chase after it. The first time that he put on golf shoes and with a club in his hand, he became an avid golf player and played up until his 90's. He also loved to bowl and never missed a season without being on a team.
Our Dad and Mom were devout Catholics and belonged to St. Joseph until all of their children had graduated. He and our Mom then joined St. Casimir Church until it was closed. He then joined Sacred Heart and was a member up until 2015 when he was moved to NY.
He was also a member of the VFW #2947, Moose Lodge #1286, Eagles #2295, American Legion #121 and the Elks Lodge #169, all in Fremont.
Our Dad lived a full life and was never met by a stranger. He would often ask why he was left on this Earth so long when he had to say goodbye to so many of his family and friends. We pray that our Mom was waiting for him, tapping her foot and asking him "What took you so long to get here"?
He is very much missed by each of us. One by one, we will be reunited with he and our Mom and the broken links in the chain will once again be attached and completed.
A Graveside Rite of Committal will be held on Saturday, May 5th 1:00 PM at Oakwood Cemetery, 1225 Oakwood St, Fremont, OH 43420, in the veteran's section. Fr.Chris Kardzis will officiate, and Military Rites will be rendered following the service.
