Rural Fremont resident, Audrey J. Nickel, 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home Sunday, May 27, 2018.
Born on Dec. 26, 1930 at home in Oak Harbor, Audrey was a daughter of John and Laura (Mays) Genzman. She graduated from Salem High School in 1948 and soon began her working career. Over her lifetime, she worked as an administrative assistant at the Erie Army Depot and at the Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools. She was also a business partner with her husband, Myron, at their construction company.
Audrey and Myron were married in Mar. 1962 in Oak Harbor. Myron survives.
Audrey was raised a farm girl and had a love for animals. She enjoyed feeding and watching birds and collecting hummingbird items. She found hope in buying trinkets from the Publishers Clearing House. She played word puzzles, watching fantasy, sci fi and western movies, cooked and listened to music. She will most be remembered as a surrogate mother to her siblings and surrogate grandmother to many of her nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are children, David Fought of Fremont, Marcia (Randall) Hyde of Oak Harbor and Mark Nickel of Fremont; 7 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and 4 siblings.
Audrey is preceded in death by her parents and 4 sisters.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 30, 1-3 & 6-8 p.m. at the Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Fremont, where Funeral Services will be Thursday, May 31, 10:30 a.m. Rev. Cheryl Wessel will officiate. Burial will be later at Greenwood Cemetery
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Research or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
