Rural Gibsonburg resident, Theda A. Bergefurd, 93, passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2018 at the Windsor Lane Health Care Center in Gibsonburg. She was born on January 12, 1925 in Washington Courthouse, OH to the late Henry and Flora (Irons) Wilt.
After Theda’s graduation from Washington Courthouse High School in 1943, she furthered her education by attending Ohio Northern University. She received her bachelor’s degree in education and taught Physical Education at Woodmore Schools until her retirement in 2000.
She was a devout member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where she facilitated with its CCD and Catechism classes and volunteered to be the Church’s bookkeeper for many years. She was also past Treasurer for the Toledo Diocese for Catholic Women and belonged to the Ohio Retired Teachers Association and Fresco’s Teachers Credit Union.
Surviving are children, John Lauer of Bright, IN, Kathy “Kit” Benefield of Gibsonburg, and Mark Lauer of Fort Myers, FL; grandchildren Lisa Sentle, Brian (Regina) Benefield, Jodi Lauer and Cory (Jennifer) Lauer; great-grandchildren Molly Burkett, Ally Sentle, Olivia, Clara & Lucas Benefield, Ivy, Niah & Blaze Lauer; and sister, Erma Schleich of Hilliard, OH.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin Bergefurd; son, Gary Lauer; and sister, Fern Bentley.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug 15, 3-7 p.m. at the Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, Aug. 16, 10:30 a.m.at St. Michael Catholic Church, Gibsonburg. Father Scott Woods and Father Ted Miller will officiate.
Burial will follow at St. Lawrence/St. Michael’s Cemetery, Gibsonburg.
Memorials may be made to St Michael’s Church or to the donor’s choice.
