Donald J. “Duck” Held, 82, of Fremont, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018, peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 10, 1936 in Fremont to Theodore “Dorie” and Marie Martha (Reinbolt) Held.
Don attended St. Joseph Central Catholic School. During his junior year, he enlisted in The United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served our country from 1953-1956. Once his enlistment was complete, Don went to Terra Technical College where he graduated in Basic Law Enforcement in 1975.
Don was a member of the Sandusky County Hawkeyes, the National Rifle Association and the Izzaak Walton League. He enjoyed target shooting and being a Volunteer Deputy Sheriff. Don held many jobs, working at Ford Motor Company, Deemer Sheet Metal, R.P Sweeney Warehouse, Oakwood Cemetery and Pure Oil Gas Station. He also worked at Moore Business Forms as a press operator until his retirement in 1994.
Don married the love of his life, Barbara Stokes on January 3,1960 and together they celebrated 58 amazing wedding anniversaries; she survives. Also surviving is his daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” (John) Runkle of Centre Hall, PA; sons, Theodore (Wendy) Held of Toledo and John (Julie) Held of Pemberville; and grandchildren, Kurtis (Michelle) Runkle, Cristian “Chrish” & Theodore “Theo” Held and Devon, Fletcher, Jesse & Hayden Held.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rose Swedersky and Gloria Picciuto; and brothers, Theodore and Edward Held.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at McPherson Cemetery, beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Scott Mauch will officiate.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of ProMedica Memorial Hospital.
